A century-old house near downtown Concord usually still has its original wood floor under one or two layers of whatever got laid over it since — a strip of carpet from the 70s, a sheet of vinyl from whoever owned it before that — and the wood underneath is rarely flat anymore, because a house that old has settled unevenly over the decades, dipping toward one corner or humping along a joist that dried out years ago.
