A stair remodel usually means pulling the old balusters and handrail, checking the treads and stringers underneath, and rebuilding with materials that actually hold up — solid wood balusters for a warmer, traditional look, or iron balusters for a cleaner, more modern line. Either way, spacing and fit have to be exact, because uneven gaps between balusters are the first thing your eye catches on a staircase, good or bad.

Treads take the most wear in the house, so refinishing them right means sanding down past the scuffs and gray wear patterns, not just screening the surface. My stairs still have the plain builder-grade balusters — can you replace just those?

Yes — swapping out balusters and the handrail without touching the rest of the staircase is one of the most common jobs Norge does.

Wood or iron balusters — which is better?

Both hold up well; it comes down to the look you want. Wood reads warmer and more traditional, iron reads cleaner and more modern. Norge can show you both at the estimate visit.

Can you refinish the treads instead of replacing the whole staircase?

Yes — worn treads can often be sanded down and refinished rather than torn out, which Norge will tell you honestly once he's looked at the actual wear.
